Newcomers are targeted specifically because they don’t know the norms yet — what a real government call sounds like, what a real landlord asks for, what a real job offer looks like. A little pattern-recognition closes most of the gap.
The scams that target newcomers most
- Fake immigration “consultants.” Only a licensed ICCRC/CICC-regulated consultant or a lawyer can legally charge for immigration advice in Canada. Anyone else charging a fee for “guaranteed” status, jobs, or PR is breaking the law — and likely scamming you.
- CRA and CBSA phone/text scams. The real CRA does not threaten arrest, demand payment by gift card or crypto, or call from a spoofed number claiming “your SIN has been suspended.” Hang up and check canada.ca/taxes-fraud-prevention.
- Fake job offers requiring upfront payment. A real Canadian employer never asks you to pay for training, equipment, or a “processing fee” before you start.
- Rental scams. Covered in more depth in how to rent with no credit history — never wire a deposit for a unit you haven’t seen in person or by video call with the actual landlord.
How to verify before you trust
Check licensing on the ICCRC/CICC public register before paying anyone for immigration help. Never send money to someone you haven’t verified is who they say they are. No legitimate Canadian government agency will ever ask for payment by gift card, e-transfer to a personal account, or cryptocurrency.
If it already happened
Report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (1-888-495-8501) and your local police non-emergency line. Log into CRA My Account directly (not through a link someone sent you) to check whether a “CRA” contact was real. Reporting doesn’t just help you — it helps flag the pattern for the next newcomer.
