You don’t need a Canadian credit history to open a bank account — and opening the right one early is the foundation for everything from rent to a future mortgage.

How it works

The “Big Five” banks (RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC) all offer newcomer packages with no monthly fee for the first year and a starter credit card with no Canadian-history requirement. Walk into a branch with your SIN and ID — in person is faster than online for newcomers.

Don’t overlook credit unions and digital banks

  • Credit unions are member-owned, often more flexible, and community-focused.
  • No-fee digital banks (EQ Bank, Simplii, Tangerine) are excellent once your first-year newcomer perks end — they save you the monthly fee for good.

The traps that cost thousands

Monthly account fees you forget to cancel, overdraft and NSF charges, and high-interest “money transfer” cheques add up. After year one, move to a no-fee account and set up alerts so a $48 fee never surprises you. Check your free credit score regularly at Borrowell or Credit Karma.
